Vegetarian Kinpira

If you’ve never made Japanese cuisine at home, this entry-level vegetable kinpira recipe is a great way to get started!

Just what is kinpira? It’s a  Japanese cooking style that can be summarized as a technique of “saute and simmer”.

All you need are a few basic veggies and spices, and it takes just a few minutes to cook. The key ingredient is sake, which offers a nice counterpoint to the sweet spices. Enjoy!

Ingredients

1 potato
1/2 onion, sliced
2 ounces of sliced carrots
1 green pepper
2 tbsp. ketchup
1/2 tbsp. soy sauce
1/2 tbsp. sake
A pinch of sugar
2 tsp. sesame oil

Preparation process

Slice the potato and green pepper into thin strips

Heat the sesame oil in a pan, then fry the onion for 1-2 minutes.

Add in the potato and carrot and stir fry for 2 minutes.

Mix in the green pepper and stir-fry for another 30 seconds.

Stir in the sugar and sake. Once mixed, add the ketchup, soy sauce and sesame oil. Stir until the all the ingredients are well mixed.

Serve with white or brown rice.
