Chinese Sesame Balls

If you’ve never had a red bean dessert, you’re in for a treat! This sweet snack is like a mini-donut, with protein-rich sweet beans instead of pudding or cream. It may take a little practice to get the shape right, but it’s well worth the effort. Your friends will love snacking on these!

Ingredients

2 ½ cups sweet rice flour
½ cup regular rice flour
½ cup sugar
1 cup hot water
18 oz can sweetened red bean paste (available in Chinese grocery stores)
1 ½ cups white sesame seeds
4 to 5 cups peanut oil

Preparation process

In a large bowl mix the sweet rice flour with the regular rice flour and mix thoroughly

In a separate bowl, add the sugar and the water and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Pour the sugar water into the flour mixture and stir until it has the consistency of cookie dough.

Place the sesame seeds and water into separate bowls and set aside.

Dip your hands in flour, then take a small piece of dough (roughly 1 ½ tablespoons) and knead it into a circle. Place this circle into the palm of your hand, and press the dough gently with your thumb to make a small indentation. Then cup your palm around the indentation and use the knuckle of your opposite hand to push along the sides to form a bowl shape

Set the dough on a floured cutting board and spoon a teaspoon of the sweet bean paste in the center. Carefully pull the dough edges over the paste and pinch them at the top. Gently roll the ball into an round shape, quickly dip it into the bowl of water and roll it in the sesame seeds until the outside is coated. Place on a plate and continue making the rest of the sesame balls.

Warm up the oil in a wok on high heat, maintaining a temperature no higher than 350 degrees.

Once the oil is hot, add 5 sesame balls, one at a time. Cook for 6 minutes, then use a slotted spoon to place them on a plate lined with paper towels. Continue cooking until all the balls are cooked, then let them cool for 10 minutes and serve.
