Caramelized Onions

I’ve always loved caramelized onions, but didn’t know how to achieve a perfect flavor at home until I saw this recipe. This recipe very simple, but it does require some patience and a willingness to draw out the flavors completely before serving. Good things come to those who wait!

Ingredients

5 large sweet onions
5 tsp butter (or 1 tsp for each onion, if making a different quantity)
Cooking oil

Preparation Process

Slice the onions, then cut the butter into small pieces

In a large, thick bottom pan, heat the cooking oil for 30 seconds, then add the butter. When the butter is melted and starts to bubble, add the onions

Stir the onions and the butter together until the onions are coated, then cover the pan and cook for 5 minutes

Turn the heat to medium low and continue to cook, stirring every 5 minutes, until the onions are browned. For proper cooking, this step should take about 45 minutes

Serve as a side dish or as a topper for the entrée of your choice.
